The "Global Menu" Delusion: Your Local Isn't Every Bar

There is a phenomenon among bar customers where some of them think that every bar everywhere serves the same thing.

Here is a classic example.

A guy walks into the bar and confidently approaches the bartender without scanning for a menu or any hint of what product is available. "Can I get a Blue Moon."

Bartender: "We don't carry Blue Moon."

This often causes confusion and maybe the dumbest follow-up possible. "You guys don't carry Blue Moon?"

As if the bartender will be prompted to remember that they do, in fact, carry Blue Moon.

Another variation of this that may be even more insane is the customer who asks for a cocktail that was made up at some random bar they went to once.

It usually goes something like this.

Customer: "Can you make me an Angry Scorpion shot?"

Bartender: "A what?"

"You've never heard of an Angry Scorpion shot?!"

Checking my sanity and possible lack of cocktail knowledge with the other bartender: "Do you know what the fuck an Angry Scorpion shot is?"

Coworker visibly hating the question before it even finishes exiting my mouth: "No."

"Sorry I don't know what an Angry Scorpion shot is. Do you know what's in it?"

"No idea."
