Walking Tabs and Wrong Receipts: When Regulars Forget Where They Are

Standard practice at almost any bar is to hold some form of payment for customers who want to keep a tab open. Of course, that rule doesn't always apply to daily regulars, especially when it isn't too busy.

However, there are always the few everyday bar-dwellers who you have to remind—usually more than once—to pay before they leave.

The "Trust Me" Policy Gone Wrong

The night was winding down, and "Vodka Bob" was past the point of being cut off. He slid out of his chair and started stumbling to the door.

"Bob, you forgot to close your tab!"

Stammering, he replied, "No, I closed with the other bartender."

Vodka Bob started fumbling around in his pockets for way too long. Assuming he was searching for his wallet, I let him have his time since he had found his way back to his stool and wasn't going anywhere. After about five minutes, Bob handed me a receipt. "See, I closed earlier."

"This is from another bar, Bob."

"Oh. How much do I owe?"
